There is probably not a company left that needs Internet access of some kind. Nobody want to stand in long queues in a bank to deposit and to arrange for payments etc. It is much easier to do it from the comfort of your chair in your office and we are not even speaking about the cost saving.

The unfortunate problem with this is the internet hell. Viruses, spam and people that tries to steal your money is about. Also some of your employees will always abuse everything they touch. So you have to protect yourself with firewalls and logging.

Traditionally Proxy servers were used to help with low bandwidth connections. Bandwidth was very expensive and not everybody could afford it. A proxy server was used to store often used web pages so these pages can be served immediately without needing to download it from some far off server on the internet.

Today's proxy servers still execute this function, but can do so much more, too much to mention here. We can add usernames and passwords so that only authorised persons can use the internet. We can stop certain web pages (sites) that are unfit for the organisation. We can also log all internet accesses. With this we can monitor abuse.
